While he freely dispenses surprise Taser attacks, he’s always the first to offer a high five, the one laughing the loudest. He is a circus ringmaster, a rodeo clown and a sadistic game show host, but always, his most important role is the one of big brother. Knoxville sports his signature Wayfarers and coif, which he allows to go silver at some point in the filming, a sort of sweet display of how long he and the crew have been up to these antics, and how long we’ve been watching them. There’s something comforting about the phrase, “I’m Johnny Knoxville, welcome to Jackass,” even, no, especially if what comes next is a display of pure human agony and humiliation. “Sublimely stupid” is what the “Jackass” crew does best, and their formula (thankfully) hasn’t wavered since the prank/stunt reality comedy show debuted on MTV in October 2000, then evolved into a film franchise spanning two decades. Let’s just say it’s “Godzilla”-inspired, with a uniquely “Jackass” twist. I don’t dare describe it, because everyone deserves to discover it for themselves, but also because this newspaper wouldn’t be able to publish the details. It’s a piece of filmmaking so bold, so audacious, and so unbelievably, sublimely stupid that it will no doubt etch itself on your brain for years to come. The opening sequence of “Jackass Forever” is one you’ll never forget. "Step Up 3D" is a silly time-waster that doesn't turn soul-crushingly unbearable when the dancing stops. For the record, many of the dance sequences are truly inspired, including a Gene Kelly-style romp through lower Manhattan that offers a light touch amid all the faux grit of the climactic contest.

And there is a ridiculous sequence involving a rooftop vent and blobs of Icee drink that is designed only to provide a dopey 3D thrill.įortunately, "Step Up 3D" features earnest and likable performances by Sevani and Stoner, and the rest of the cast acts with surprising competence. Like the "Breakin'" movies, the Andy Hardy films and scores of lightweight/low-expectation movies going back to the dawn of celluloid, "Step Up 3D" would blow away like chalk dust if not for the dancing.

On the plus side, Luke has a promising love interest in the secretive Natalie (Sharni Vinson) and has a chance to save the loft if the Pirates, with Moose in tow, win a dance competition. Luke, a promising filmmaker, is facing foreclosure on the loft and intense rivalry from a former Pirate, Julien (Joe Slaughter) and his seamy new crew. This is when Moose meets Luke (Rick Malambri), who runs a loft studio for his dance crew, the Pirates. Well, one walk through Washington Square Park settles that, but now Moose has to worry about splitting time between school, Camille and his compulsion to pop, lock and spin. Sevani plays Moose, the connective DNA between this sequel and the otherwise unrelated "Step Up 2 the Streets." The dance prodigy and promising electrical engineer has left Baltimore to attend New York University with best buddy Camille (Alyson Stoner), and his parents hold out hope that he's done with all that dancing business.

Sometimes a movie "is what it is," and nothing could be truer of "Step Up 3D." It is a hip-hop dance movie with a flimsy plot designed mainly to bracket a series of impressive performance sequences, so the only expectations are that it be mildly diverting and not be so brain-meltingly stupid that it saps audiences of the will to live.
